Monday night, Sen. John Thune, R-S.D., made a rallying cry for conservatives in opposition to Sonia Sotomayor: "We need you involved in this process," he said in a conference call administered by the Judicial Confirmation Network. "What you are all doing is so important, to help us as we communicate Judge Sotomayor's judicial record."
Thune, who has been one of the most outspoken Republicans in the process (he has launched a Web site tracking the nomination), expressed concern about Sotomayor's involvement in LatinoJustice PRLDEF and the Democrats' timetable.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and Judiciary Chairman Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., "are going to jam through this lifetime appointment rather than provide a full and fair review of her record," he warned.
The conference call differed from others of its kind in that the JCN opened it up not just to the media, but to individual citizens as well. Gary Marx, the group's executive director, said "thousands" of people were on the call.

I just can't understand how they can possibly think this is a winning strategy! There is nothing anywhere that says she doesn't rule by anything but the law and they just appear to be in a frenzied panic because there is an Hispanic woman on the Supreme Court. It's pathetic and to me, it just proves that they are not all that intelligent if they think this and blocking health care, etc., will help them in any way! It may certainly assure that they will never win the minority vote again!

This is eating their own, this is eating their party. How many minority votes do they think they'll get using this as outreach and expansion strategies. What are they thinking?

I'm 63, female, and white, and I can't understand what the Republicans are thinking, either! I actually WANT diversity on the Supreme Court! I WANT my Latino neighbors, and my black neighbors, my Native American neighbors, and my Asian neighbors represented in ALL facets of my government. Listen, GOP! WE ARE ONE COUNTRY! THERE ARE NO SECOND-CLASS AMERICANS! And if that isn't persuavive enough, just remember that what the law and the courts and the establishmed institutions can do to one of us, it can do to ANY of us! The only way for old white women like me to be safe in this country is for every black man, Latino child, Asian teenager, and Native American senior to be safe as well! Hanging on to your power by disenfranchising others is DOOMED to fail because soon you will be too much in the minority yourselves to manage that any long - and you seem to be the only people in the country who doesn't realize that! Smarten up! Or don't, and let those of us who REALLY believe in in the equal rights f...

How on earth does one expect the Republican Party to be open to any race...when they cannot even get along with themselves?! Look at the disarray within their party as we speak. They know they are beat, and that was BEFORE SENATOR Al Franken won his case just today!
I simply fail to see the frantic running-about as anything more than crybaby-antics. The Republican party today is absolutely pathetic.

It was Thune who accepted Bill Frist's help in campaigning against Tom Daschle. For the first time in 50 years, one Senate party leader campaigned against another. Thune and Frist threw any idea of collegiality out the window. I lost all respect for both of them.
